Sealed drag matters
Steelhead reels live in cold water, snow, and wet sand. A sealed disc drag means grit and water don't get into the drag stack. Cork drags are old-school and lovely to feel, but require maintenance after sandy days.
Arbor size
Large-arbor reels pick up line faster — important when a fish runs at you. They also stress the line less because the inner spool diameter is larger. Skip mid-arbor and small-arbor for modern steelhead reels.
Backing capacity
A 7/8 or 8/9 reel should hold a WF8F line plus 200 yards of 20lb backing. For Great Lakes steelhead this is plenty — fish rarely run more than 100 yards. For Pacific or chrome bright steelhead, step up backing to 250.
