Best Spey Lines for Steelhead
Spey lines are a system, not a single line. You'll run a Skagit head with a sink tip for most cold-weather work, switch to a Scandi for low-water swung flies, and you'll pair both with a running line. Pick proven heads from Rio, Scientific Anglers, or OPST. Match the head weight to your rod (most rods print recommended grain windows on the blank).

Skagit head
Short and heavy (20–27 ft, 425–575 grains). Designed to turn over heavy sink tips and bulky intruders. The default for cold-water swung-fly steelheading.
Scandi head
Longer and lighter (30–40 ft, 350–500 grains). Casts smaller flies on a floating presentation. Better in clear, low water (fall or summer steelhead).
Running line
Mono running line shoots farther but tangles more. Coated running line is more user-friendly. OPST Lazar Line is a popular middle ground.
