Spey lines are a system, not a single line. You'll run a Skagit head with a sink tip for most cold-weather work, switch to a Scandi for low-water swung flies, and you'll pair both with a running line. Skagit head

Short and heavy (20–27 ft, 425–575 grains). Designed to turn over heavy sink tips and bulky intruders. The default for cold-water swung-fly steelheading.

Scandi head

Longer and lighter (30–40 ft, 350–500 grains). Casts smaller flies on a floating presentation. Better in clear, low water (fall or summer steelhead).

Running line

Mono running line shoots farther but tangles more. Coated running line is more user-friendly. OPST Lazar Line is a popular middle ground.

Skagit. The fishing is dominated by cold water, sink tips, and bigger streamer-style flies. A Scandi is a secondary head for fall low-water windows.

How do I know what grain weight to buy?
Look at the printed grain window on your rod blank, or check the manufacturer's website. A 7wt switch rod typically takes 425–475 grains in Skagit; an 8wt full spey takes 525–575.

OPST Commando vs full Skagit?
OPST Commando heads are shorter (under 20 ft) and designed for tighter rivers and easier casting. Full Skagit heads (Rio, SA) are longer and load bigger rods. For Steelhead Alley's tighter rivers, Commando is a great choice.

Do I need both Skagit and Scandi?
Not to start. Get a Skagit head and a sink-tip kit first — covers 80% of the season. Add a Scandi after a year if you fish low water often.
