Albright Knot
A classic line-to-line knot for backing, braid, mono, and diameter changes.
The Albright is a classic, and half the internet ties an Alberto while calling it one. Full steps are queued for the next content pass.
How to tie it

Form a loop in the heavier line (leader or wire) and pinch the loop closed between thumb and forefinger.

Pass the tag end of the lighter line through the loop and lay it along one side of the loop, pointing away from the closed end.

Wrap the lighter line back over itself and over both strands of the heavier-line loop, working from the closed end of the loop toward the open end.

Make 10 to 12 tight wraps total, keeping each wrap snug against the last so the coils stack neatly along the loop.

Pass the lighter-line tag back through the loop, exiting on the same side it originally entered.

Wet the wraps and pull the standing lines apart slowly until the wraps slide down the loop and seat at the open end.

Trim both tag ends close to the knot.

When to use it
- Wire leaders to mono or fluoro when chasing toothy fish — pike, musky, lake-run brown trout chewing through tippet.
- Heavy braid to mono leader when you want a stronger seat than an Alberto and don't need an FG's slim profile.
- Fly-line backing to fly line, or mono backing to braid main line.
- Connecting two lines with a real diameter mismatch — much bigger than what a blood knot or surgeon's will tolerate.
- Salt and Great Lakes setups where line classes step down dramatically between mainline and shock leader.
Common screw-ups
- Exiting the loop on the opposite side of where you entered — the wraps will twist into a tangle instead of seating cleanly.
- Letting the wraps spread out instead of stacking them against each other while you build the knot.
- Cinching by pulling the tags — only the standing lines can slide the wraps down the loop into the seat.
- Forgetting the security wrap or extra hitch on really slick braid setups (the Albright Special variant exists for exactly this reason).
