Carp on the fly is the freshwater bonefish — visual, demanding, and deeply rewarding. Great Lakes flats hold thousands of cruising and tailing carp from June through August. The right fly is small, weighted just enough, and looks like food. Backstabbers, woolly buggers, swimming nymphs, and small crayfish patterns are the proven family. Backstabbers and crayfish
The backstabber (rabbit strip with bead chain eyes) and a small weighted crayfish pattern are the two foundational carp flies. Olive, brown, and rust are the colors. Size 6 to 10.
Sight-fish or blind cast?
Sight-fishing tailing carp on flats is the premium experience. Blind-casting structure also works in stained water. Either way, set the fly within 12 inches of the fish's nose — too far and they ignore it.
Soft landing matters
Carp spook fast. A weighted fly that splashes blows the fish out. Tie or buy with bead chain instead of dumbbell eyes for clearer water and skinny flats.
