Best Carp Flies

Carp on the fly is the freshwater bonefish — visual, demanding, and deeply rewarding. Great Lakes flats hold thousands of cruising and tailing carp from June through August. The right fly is small, weighted just enough, and looks like food. Backstabbers, woolly buggers, swimming nymphs, and small crayfish patterns are the proven family. Add a 7-weight rod and you have a summer obsession. Carp on the fly is the warmwater equivalent of bonefishing — sight-cast presentations to tailing fish in shallow water, with a refusal-or-eat trigger that has nothing to do with luck and everything to do with presentation. Lake Erie's flats around the islands hold carp that will eat a #8 weighted nymph (a Carp Bitters, Crawfish Crawly, or San Juan Worm) presented within 12 inches of the fish's mouth. The trick is finding the fish (polarized glasses, calm water, sun overhead) and presenting the fly without spooking. Casts must land softly; flies must sink at the right rate; the strip must be subtle. When the technique clicks, carp on the fly is the most rewarding warmwater game.
