Best Flies for Steelhead
Steelhead are particular but not picky — they want the right size, the right depth, and a presentation that looks alive. The best Great Lakes steelhead flies fall into four categories: eggs (the staple), nymphs (especially stones and caddis), streamers (woolly buggers, leeches), and intruders (for swung fly anglers). These patterns have caught more chrome than anything else on the Alley. A working steelhead fly box has roughly 50 patterns across egg / nymph / streamer / swing categories — enough to cover early-fall fresh fish, mid-winter slack water, spring spawning-aggression eats, and late-spring kelting. Eggs and beads carry the day across the Great Lakes — sucker-spawn cycles in Lake Erie tributaries drive egg-eating behavior from October through May. Nymphs (stoneflies, hot-spot variants, Pheasant Tails) earn their place during transition water + low-clarity periods. Streamers and swung patterns (intruders, leeches, sex dungeons) come out for aggressive fish and big water. The right fly is less a question of pattern than of size, color, and weight matched to the current conditions.

Buyer's Guide
Match the conditions
Clear water — small natural patterns (#10–14 nymphs, beadhead caddis). Stained water — bigger or brighter (#6–10 stones, glo-bugs). Muddy water — go bright and big (chartreuse globugs, pink intruders). The best fly box covers all three water states.
Egg patterns are non-negotiable
Trout and salmon eggs are protein in a current. Steelhead eat them year-round. Stock orange, peach, chartreuse, pink, and white in #10 and #12. Sucker spawn is the second-most-important egg pattern — fish it from late February through April.
Don't forget the swing flies
When fish move into tailouts and feel comfortable, a swung intruder or marabou tube fly will out-fish a dead-drift. Pink, purple, and black are the colors. Build a 4–6 fly swing box.
Size matters more than pattern
A #8 olive-bead egg fly and a #8 brown-bead egg fly will both catch fish. A #4 egg fly and a #16 egg fly will both NOT catch fish on the same day. Size to conditions: dirty water + dropping = larger (#6-#8); low + clear = smaller (#10-#14). Most anglers carry 3 sizes of each productive pattern.
Hooks: not all #8 hooks are equal
Steelhead are big enough fish that hook-bend resistance matters. Look for Tiemco TMC 5263, Daiichi 1530, or Mustad C53S as the proven egg/nymph hook standards. Cheap hooks bend out under heavy steelhead pressure. The 50-cent hook upgrade is the cheapest reliable insurance an angler buys.
