Indicator nymphing is how the majority of steelhead get caught on Great Lakes tributaries, and the nymph at the end of the leader is doing the actual work. Stoneflies are the workhorse
A black or brown #6-#10 rubber-leg stonefly (Pat's Rubber Legs, Girdle Bug, beadhead stonefly) is the single most productive steelhead nymph on Great Lakes tribs. Heavy enough to get down, big enough to be seen in stained water, durable enough to catch 20 fish. If you tie one nymph, tie this one.
Hot-spot patterns earn their keep
A hot-spot (fluorescent pink, orange, or chartreuse thread band, bead, or collar) on an otherwise drab nymph adds a strike trigger that steelhead respond to disproportionately well. Hot-spot Pheasant Tails, hot-bead Hare's Ears, and hot-collar stones outproduce their plain cousins 2-to-1 in cold water.
Size + weight match the run
Big water + heavy flow = #6-#8 tungsten-bead nymphs. Average conditions = #10-#12. Low + clear = #14-#16 unweighted with split shot. Match the weight to the run more than to the season.
