Summer trout fishing isn't about big steelhead — it's about resident browns, brookies, and stocked rainbows in cold-water tributaries. The flies change too: terrestrials (hoppers, ants, beetles), caddis, small mayflies, and short streamers replace the egg-and-nymph game. These are the patterns that match what trout actually eat in July and August. Summer trout fly selection in the Steelhead Alley region (the inland trout streams within ~2 hours of Cleveland/Erie/Buffalo) emphasizes terrestrials + small subsurface patterns. Terrestrials are the summer staple
Hoppers (Chubby Chernobyl, Morrish Hopper), beetles, and ants are summer trout candy. Fish them tight to the bank — that's where terrestrials end up. Sizes #10–14.
Don't skip caddis
