Crayfish Life Cycle: The Original Lake Erie Smallmouth Forage

Before the round goby invasion of the early 1990s rewrote the Lake Erie food web, crayfish were approximately half the smallmouth bass diet. Post-invasion, goby took the throne at ~75%; crayfish dropped to 8.0% frequency and 6.8% volume per NYSDEC 2024 (Tier 1, late-summer Eastern Basin n=25). But "displaced" is not "eliminated." Egg, larva, juvenile, adult -- the Cambaridae lifecycle every Steelhead Alley angler should understand before tying on a Clouser Crayfish or rigging a Yamamoto swimbait.

TL;DR -- if you only read one block

Crayfish are family Cambaridae (order Decapoda). Pennsylvania's Lake Erie basin alone holds at least six native species per Allison et al. 2019 (Tier 3 peer-reviewed): Cambarus robustus, Faxonius propinquus, and Cambarus carinirostris are the most abundant, with F. obscurus, F. immunis, and Creaserinus fodiens also confirmed. Rusty crayfish (Faxonius rusticus) is cryptogenic in Lake Erie per USGS NAS and is documented as an aggressive displacer of natives.
Mating runs in two windows. Per USGS NAS (Tier 3, rusty crayfish baseline): late summer / early fall, and early spring. Eggs are carried under the female's abdomen and hatch in three to six weeks depending on water temperature. Lifespan runs 3-4 years for rusty crayfish; native Cambaridae species-specific lifespans remain source-required.
Adult size tops out around 10 cm (~4 in). Rusty crayfish mature at ~3.5 cm (1.4 in) per USGS NAS Tier 3. The angler-translation 1.5-3.0 in body length band sits in this mature-to-adult range and matches hook sizes 4-8 / soft-plastic body sizes that mirror the documented size class.
Still 8% of smallmouth diet post-goby. NYSDEC 2024 bass/perch diet analysis (Tier 1, n=25 smallmouth stomachs, late-summer Eastern Basin) documents crayfish in 8.0% of diets at 6.8% volume. Pre-invasion, crayfish were ~50% of smallmouth diet; round goby (~75% post-invasion) displaced but never eliminated the crayfish lane. Patterns still produce -- they're one rotation option, not the default search bait they were before 1993.

The Lake Erie smallmouth bass fishery has a "before" and "after" -- and the marker is the early-1990s round goby invasion. Before goby, smallmouth diet rode on crayfish at roughly 50% composition. After goby established, the diet flipped: goby climbed to ~75% and crayfish dropped to a fraction of that. But the diet study NYSDEC released in March 2024, sampling 25 smallmouth stomachs across the late-summer Eastern Basin, still found crayfish in 8.0% of stomachs at 6.8% volume. Why this pillar matters for steelhead and smallmouth anglers

Crayfish patterns hit two different lanes on Steelhead Alley. The defensible Tier 1 anchor is for smallmouth bass: NYSDEC 2024 documents 8.0% frequency / 6.8% volume in the late-summer Eastern Basin sample. That's the post-goby reality -- still meaningful, no longer dominant. Stage summary: Crayfish eggs are carried externally, glued to the female's swimmerets (pleopods) under her abdomen until hatch. There is no broadcast spawn into the water column -- this is a brooding decapod, fundamentally different from broadcast-spawning fish like emerald shiner.

Timing. Per USGS NAS (Tier 3, rusty crayfish baseline): mating occurs in late summer, early fall, or early spring. Females carry the fertilized eggs through the brood-development period; eggs hatch in three to six weeks depending on water temperature. Warmer water shortens incubation; colder water extends it. Lifecycle stage 2: Larva (post-hatch attached stage)

Stage summary: Crayfish do not have a free-swimming planktonic larval stage like many marine decapods. After hatching from the egg, the tiny crayfish remain attached to the female's swimmerets through one or more molts before becoming independent. This is direct development from hatch to recognizable juvenile -- the "larva" stage is short, sheltered, and tied to the mother.

Lifecycle stage 3: Juvenile (smaller body class, high predation vulnerability)

Stage summary: Once independent, juvenile crayfish are dramatically more vulnerable than either the brooded larvae or the adults. How lifecycle stages map to angler patterns

Now the angler-translation. Each stage above carries direct implications for fly + lure selection.

Cover targeting: prioritize rocky/cobble substrate and woody-debris cover lines. A steelhead-specific or salmonid-tributary diet study targeting Cambaridae would be needed to upgrade the steelhead-crayfish lane from translation heuristic to source-backed.
  • Brown trout and walleye crayfish-selectivity in Lake Erie. Both are documented opportunistic crayfish predators in broader literature; Lake Erie tributary-specific quantitative data is [source-required].
  • Ohio + New York Lake Erie tributary species lists. Allison et al. 2019 covers Pennsylvania's Lake Erie basin specifically.
