July through September is terrestrial season on the inland trout streams within two hours of the Steelhead Alley. Hoppers blunder into the water from cut banks; ants tumble from overhanging leaves; beetles plop in with a kind of resigned dignity. Trout eat all of them with conviction. The Letort beetle, the Dave's Hopper, the Chernobyl Ant, and the foam ant are the workhorses; the only real mistake is not having any.

Foam hoppers float forever and survive 40 fish without rebuilding. Hair-bodied patterns (Joe's Hopper) look better but sink after a few. Carry foam (Chernobyl, Fat Albert, Morrish Hopper) #8–#12 for late summer; hair patterns for picky fish.
Ants matter more than people think
A #14–#18 foam ant catches educated trout that have refused every Adams on the planet. Carry black, cinnamon, and one bicolor variant. Drift them tight to overhanging brush.
Beetles for hot afternoons
Japanese and bark beetles drop in during the warmest hours. A foam beetle (#12–#16) with a hi-vis post is the indicator on shallow runs. Treats wary fish like they're seeing the season's first juicy mistake.
