Uni Knot

A versatile knot for terminal tackle, braid, and adjustable loops. If you learn one knot family, make it this one.

The 30-second pitch

The Uni is less a knot and more a family business. Terminal knot, line connection, bobber stop, loop variant - it keeps showing up with a different hat on. Learn the basic wrap-and-cinch motion and half the knot library suddenly stops looking like tax paperwork.

  1. 1

Run the tag end through the hook eye and lay it alongside the standing line.

  2. 2

Form a loop by turning the tag end back toward the hook.

  3. 3

Wrap the tag around both lines inside the loop 5 to 7 times.

  4. 4

Wet the wraps and pull the tag end to form a compact coil.

  5. 5

When to use it

  • Terminal tackle on mono, fluorocarbon, or braid.
  • Heavier line where a clinch knot gets bulky or unreliable.
  • Making a sliding loop before snugging tight to the hook eye.
  • Building toward double-Uni line connections later.

Common screw-ups

  • Wrapping only around the tag end instead of both lines.
  • Pulling the standing line too early, before the coil has formed.
  • Leaving a loose coil that slides under pressure.
