Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) are the largest Pacific salmon species and -- by introduction -- the largest fish in the SHA-tracked Lake Ontario tributary set. They share the genus with steelhead (O. mykiss), pink salmon (O. gorbuscha), and Coho (O. kisutch), all of which are Pacific by origin and now established to varying degrees in the Great Lakes.
Identification cues, in order of usefulness:
- Black mouth and gum line -- the single most reliable ID cue separating Chinook from Coho, the other large fall salmon. Coho have a white gum line; Chinook are unambiguously black.
- Spotted tail (the whole fin) -- both upper and lower lobes of the caudal fin carry distinct black spots. Coho spots are only on the upper lobe.
- Black spots on the back + dorsal fin -- continuous spotting; the back is heavily marked.
- Large body -- Lake Ontario fish routinely exceed 20 lbs; 30+ lb fish are common during the peak run.
- Pre-spawn coloration -- adults darken substantially as spawning approaches; fresh chrome fish in late August transition to brick-red and olive by October.
- Hooked kype -- mature males develop a pronounced hooked jaw; the kype is the most visually striking secondary sexual characteristic in the Pacific salmonid family.

Chinook salmon are native to the North Pacific basin -- their natural range extends from California up the western coast of North America through Alaska, then west to Russia + Japan. In their native range they are anadromous: spawn in freshwater, smolt to the ocean, return to the natal river to spawn once and die. Chinook are listed as threatened or endangered in several Pacific stocks (especially California Central Valley + Snake River Basin).
In the SHA-tracked region, Chinook are an introduced lake-going population:
- Lake Ontario -- the dominant population. NYSDEC has stocked Chinook smolts since the late 1960s under the broader Great Lakes salmonid program. Current annual stocking is approximately 1.5 million smolts across multiple tributaries.
- Lake Erie -- much smaller program; Chinook are not a primary management focus on Lake Erie tributaries.
- Lake Huron, Lake Michigan -- substantial historical populations; Lake Michigan in particular supports a major Chinook fishery, though the population dynamics have shifted significantly with alewife population swings.
Lake Ontario Chinook return to the SHA-tracked tributaries that receive NYSDEC stocking -- primarily the Salmon River, the lower Genesee, Oak Orchard Creek, and the Burt Dam reach of the Niagara County Eighteenmile.

Year-over-year timing varies with lake-water temperatures, rainfall, and the specific tributary's flow regime. Reservoir-controlled rivers (Salmon River below the Lighthouse Hill reservoir) maintain more consistent flows than rain-dependent tribs.

Chinook salmon are anadromous semelparous -- they migrate between lake (formerly ocean) and freshwater, and they spawn exactly once and die. The life-history sequence:
- Eggs deposited in tributary gravel by spawning adults October-November. Females excavate a redd; eggs incubate over winter under the gravel.
- Alevin and emergence -- eggs hatch in spring; alevin remain in the gravel feeding off yolk-sac reserves for 4-6 weeks; emerge as small fry.
- Fry and parr -- juveniles rear in the tributary for 6-12 months; feed primarily on aquatic invertebrates; territorial.
- Smoltification -- typically at age 1 (3-5 inches), juveniles undergo physiological changes preparing for lake life. Smolts migrate out of the tributary into Lake Ontario.
- Lake-feeding adults -- 3-4 years of growth in Lake Ontario. Diet is primarily alewife (and historically rainbow smelt) at depth in the lake.
- Return migration -- mature adults (age 3-5, most age 4) return to the natal tributary to spawn. Driven by olfactory imprinting from juvenile life.
- Spawning + death -- spawn once, then die within 1-2 weeks. The post-spawn die-off is a major seasonal nutrient pulse to the tributary ecosystem.
Critical management implication: the Lake Ontario Chinook population is entirely sustained by NYSDEC stocking. Natural reproduction occurs but at a level insufficient to support the recreational fishery; the stocked smolt program is the foundation.

Chinook salmon are obligate piscivores once they reach the lake. Tributary juveniles eat aquatic invertebrates; lake-going adults eat fish. The Lake Ontario adult Chinook diet historically (and currently) is dominated by a single prey species:

Once a Chinook enters its natal tributary to spawn, it stops feeding entirely. The aggressive strikes anglers see during the run are territorial responses, not feeding responses -- the fish are defending spawning territory, not hunting prey. Egg patterns, beads, and large attractor flies work because they trigger the territorial response, not because the fish are hungry.
Behavior patterns

Chinook behavior shifts dramatically between lake-feeding and tributary-spawning phases. The lake-feeding adult is a patient deep-water predator; the tributary-spawning adult is a territorial, aggressive, doomed migrant.
Notable behavioral patterns:
- Lake feeding -- adults follow the thermocline through the summer (typically 50-150 ft depth), feeding on alewife schools. Lake trollers target this stage.
- Stage at the tributary mouth -- pre-run fish stage in the lake-mouth zone (water 30-60 ft) waiting for the trigger combination of cooling temps + tributary flow + rain. The Salmon River mouth area concentrates fish in late August.
- Tributary migration -- once triggered, fish push hard. Salmon River fish can move from the mouth to the upper reaches within 24-48 hours of a major rain event.
- Holding pools -- fish hold in deeper pools between spawning runs, often in tight schools. Pool concentrations during the peak run can be visually striking from the bank.
- Spawning territory -- mature males defend gravel redds aggressively against other fish; pre-spawn aggression is the basis of the technical fishing approach (egg patterns + bead rigs trigger the territorial response).
- Post-spawn -- spent adults drift, weaken, and die within 1-2 weeks. The bodies become forage for everything downstream including resident smallmouth, drum, lake-run brown trout, and various warmwater species.

Chinook habitat requirements differ by life stage:
- Lake habitat (adult) -- cold water (50-65 degF preferred), open lake mid-depths (50-150 ft summer), proximity to alewife schools. Lake Ontario provides excellent Chinook habitat in summer.
- Tributary habitat (run) -- adequate flow, accessible (no impassable dams), pool + run + riffle structure with gravel spawning bottoms. Most NY Lake Ontario tribs that receive Chinook stocking have suitable holding water in the lower + middle reaches.
- Spawning habitat -- clean gravel + cobble substrate, 1-3 ft depth, moderate flow. Sediment burial reduces egg survival. Hatchery-supplemented populations don't depend on natural spawning success, but successful spawning where it occurs builds population resilience.
- Juvenile habitat -- shallow, protected tributary habitat for fry + parr. Smolts need clear migration corridor to the lake.
The Salmon River is purpose-built habitat for the Lake Ontario Chinook fishery: reservoir-controlled summer flows keep the lower river cool and fishable; the river-wide gravel + cobble substrate supports spawning; multiple deep pools provide holding water; the NYSDEC Salmon River Fish Hatchery provides stocking-side support. Other Lake Ontario tribs (Genesee, Oak Orchard, Eighteenmile Niagara) offer good but less-specialized Chinook habitat.

The Lake Ontario Chinook fishery exists because of a 1960s ecological emergency. Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) had been accidentally introduced to the Great Lakes via the Welland Canal and exploded in the absence of natural predators. By the 1960s, summer alewife die-offs were producing windrows of dead fish along Great Lakes beaches at a scale that constituted both a public-health concern and a public-relations disaster for the lake-shore tourism economy.
The fisheries-management response was to introduce a predator that could eat alewife at scale. The Pacific salmonids were available, well-studied, and known to perform well on alewife-equivalent prey. Chinook, Coho, and steelhead were all stocked into the Great Lakes beginning in the late 1960s.
The result was one of the largest accidental fishery successes in North American history. The Chinook ate the alewife at sufficient scale to suppress the population. The unintended consequence was the emergence of a world-class Lake Ontario salmon fishery -- Pulaski, NY transformed from a sleepy upstate village into one of the largest freshwater sport-fishing destinations in the country.
The contemporary tension: as alewife populations have declined across the Great Lakes (due to a combination of Chinook predation, dreissenid mussel competition for zooplankton, and other factors), the very prey that sustained the introduced fishery is now in shorter supply. Lake Michigan has already seen significant Chinook population dips; Lake Ontario remains relatively stable but the long-term dynamics are uncertain. The species that was introduced to control alewife is now dependent on alewife abundance.
If you fish Chinook on the Salmon River, you are fishing the consequences of a fifty-year-old ecological intervention that worked in ways nobody quite predicted.

Snagging is illegal in all SHA-relevant jurisdictions and is the most-cited enforcement action during the peak Salmon River run. The fishing must be presentation-based -- drift, swing, or active retrieve -- and the hook-set must occur in the mouth area, not the body.
